If you live in Mueller's residential permit parking zones — which cover most streets within the development — you'll need a residential parking permit to avoid the two-hour parking limit enforced Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here's how to get one.

Step 1: Check If You Need One

Look for "RP" (Residential Permit) signs on your block. If your street has these signs, you need a permit for any vehicle parked on the street for more than two hours during enforcement hours. Driveways and private garage spaces do not require permits.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

You'll need: a valid Texas driver's license or ID with your Mueller address, current vehicle registration matching that address, and a lease or utility bill if your ID hasn't been updated yet. If your vehicle registration shows a different address, bring a current insurance card with the Mueller address.

Step 3: Apply

Apply online at austintexas.gov/parking-permits or in person at the Austin Transportation Department, 505 Barton Springs Road, Suite 800. Online applications are processed within 3-5 business days. In-person applications receive same-day permits.

The fee is $25 per vehicle per year. Each household can purchase up to four residential permits and two visitor permits. Visitor permits allow guests to park for up to 72 hours without restriction.

Step 4: Display Your Permit

Hang the permit from your rearview mirror or place the sticker on your rear bumper (instructions come with the permit). Digital permits are also available — your license plate is registered in the enforcement system, so no physical display is needed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't assume your apartment complex's parking permit covers street parking — it doesn't. Don't wait until you get a ticket — the first offense is $40, and tickets can be issued every two hours. Don't forget to renew — permits expire annually on the date of issue, and there's no grace period.
